Winnie the Pooh & Honey Pots Too!

Winnie the Pooh & Honey Pot Cake Pops.

Hello my fellow cake pop lovers!

It’s been a busy yet completely fantastic past 6 months and although I haven’t had as much time for blogging, I have still been making some pretty amazing little cake pop creations. To get back in the swing of things, I thought it would be fun to show off the pops I made for a one-year-old birthday party last month.

The party theme was Winnie the Pooh (what 1-year-old wouldn’t love that?!) and I found a wonderful tutorial on Bakerella.com to get me started. As you’ll see in some of the pics, I used gluten-free cake mix to accommodate some of the guests that were there and I’m happy to say that although there is a slight difference in texture, the taste was just as yummy as you would expect from Betty Crocker. I do recommend using a bit more icing than you would with a regular cake mix.

Flip through my slideshow and see how I created these adorable little guys.

Party Hats

This isn’t the first time that I’ve made party hat pops, but I was SO happy with the colour scheme and sprinkle combination for these pops that I had to dedicate a whole post to it. My go-to cake pop design for birthday parties has typically been mini cupcakes but these adorable little creations will give the cupcakes a run for their money!

Bring on the Olympics!

National Flag Pops.

Take a look at my little Canadian and Italian flags! These were two of the more simplistic pops that I’ve created lately but the reactions I got from people who saw them were fantastic. The Canadian flags were made as part of a “Welcome to Canada” basket for a couple visiting from the UK and the Italian flags were for a friend’s birthday party. It’s hard to say which ones I like best, although the adorable little boy in my pics makes me lean more towards the Italian pops. Big thanks to Domenic and his momma, Maria, for being my cake pop models by the way!

I’m thinking with the Summer Olympics right around the corner, I should start looking into other national flag designs. Possibly if I send enough Union Jack cake pop samples to the UK then they will fall in love and fly me to London to open a “Pops of the World” cake pop booth, just in time for the Olympics?? I think it could work.

Are there any other national flag pops you would like to see me make?

I Choo Choo Choose … Thomas

Thomas the Tank Engine.

Since discovering the wonderful world of cake pops and the endless design options for them, I often catch myself looking at things like cars, fruit, make-up, celebrities, etc. and I imagine how I would turn each one into a cake pop if I had to. I’ve attempted some of these ideas and am ready just in case anyone requests a cake pop that looks like a tube of lipstick, however the most exciting thing for me is taking someone else’s idea and making that into a one-of-a-kind pop. This is why I was SO excited when I got the request to make Thomas the Tank Engine pops for a 3-year-old’s birthday party last week!

This was my first time creating a train pop of any sort and I had (probably too much) fun combing through the bulk food aisles trying to find the perfect features for Thomas’ steam whistle (yes, I had to look up the name for this), his face and  headlights. Since I didn’t have any luck finding edible grey candy to make his face, I decided to tint my own chocolate grey and freehand it on. I’m really happy with how he turned out.

Now, I have to admit, Thomas the Tank Engine creeped me out when I was younger and I immediately changed the channel to Mr. Dressup when the show came on, but I think if the animators took some pointers from me and made his face a little more cartoony and less life-like then I’m sure he’d have an even bigger following. Although he has been around for 65 years now, so they must be doing something right…

For all you Sports Fans

This past Sunday, the Super Bowl marked the end of another football season and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t happy about it. I’m not an avid sports fan, but when I do sit down to watch a game, 99% of the time it’s hockey.

I’m a Leafs fan myself (please, hold you “boos”) and a couple weeks ago I was thrilled when I had the chance to make hockey-themed cake pops. They were for a birthday party that happened to fall on the same night as a Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens face-off. As you’ll see, I put an equal amount of love and care into each team’s pops, despite my Leafs bias:

These cake pops raised the question “If you love _____ team, do you eat that cake pop or eat the opponent??”
